The concept is simple; the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten.
The Washington County Public Library facilitates the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge for Washington County community members. This challenge aims to promote childhood literacy and deepen bonding between children and parents.
Rules are simple, all you need to do is read to your newborn to five-year-old. Rereading your child’s favorite book is encouraged! Regularly reading to children promotes language, emotional, and educational development. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success.
Pick up the worksheet at the library and mark off a spot for every time you read a book to your child. When you have completed the sheet, drop it off to Mrs. Clara to receive a prize! Take pictures of your child with the books or while you’re reading to them and share it to your social media, tagging the Washington County Public Library and the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten organization!
American Academy of Pediatrics says, “Research has shown that reading together with infants and young children significantly strengthens their relationships with parents and caregivers, promoting early brain development and attachment during crucial growth stages. This lays the groundwork for school readiness and long-term benefits throughout life.” Promoting childhood literacy sets your child up for social and academic success.
